Overhead Door Hardware: Not Just for Doors
Overhead Door Hardware: Not Just for Doors
Here's something most people don't know about Rolling Center: while gates are our heartland, some of our most interesting projects have nothing to do with gates at all.
Our overhead door and gate hardware range — tracks, rollers, carriages, ceiling brackets, and stops — is exactly what you need for any application where something heavy needs to slide smoothly and reliably. And once you start looking, those applications turn up everywhere.
The project that really brought this home for us was a sliding carpet display rack for BAYA Living in Richmond. Scott from AOF Commercial Solutions came to us with an idea and a challenge: he needed a system that could hold the weight of heavy rolled rugs, be easy for staff to move, and look elegant in a retail environment. Our overhead track and nylon roller carriages were the perfect fit — the same components we'd spec for a heavy sliding door, doing exactly the same job in a completely different context.
That job got us thinking about all the other places this hardware belongs.
Barn doors and internal sliding doors
The barn door look has been popular in Australian homes for years now — and it's not going anywhere. A sliding timber or steel panel on an exposed track is a practical and striking alternative to a conventional hinged door, particularly in open-plan spaces where a swinging door would eat into the room.
The hardware requirements are essentially the same as a lightweight gate: overhead track, roller carriages rated for the door weight, ceiling fixing brackets, and end stops. Our 81Z lightweight overhead track and nylon four-wheel roller carriages handle most residential internal door weights with ease and run almost silently — which matters when it's inside your home.
The same system works equally well for pantry doors, wardrobe sliders, laundry doors, and room dividers.
External sliding doors
For outdoor applications — a shed with a large sliding door, a workshop entrance, or an alfresco area with a sliding screen panel — you need hardware rated for exposure to the elements. Our heavier-duty overhead track options in galvanised steel handle the outdoor environment and the additional weight that larger panels bring.
External sliding doors on sheds and workshops are one of the most common non-gate applications for our hardware. A lot of shed owners don't realise that the same suppliers who do gate hardware also stock what they need for their workshop door — at trade prices and with the product knowledge to back it up.
Industrial barn doors and warehouse dividers
At the heavier end of the scale, our industrial overhead sliding and folding track systems handle large, heavy panels in warehouse and commercial fit-out environments. These are applications where the door might weigh several hundred kilograms and be operated dozens of times a day — the same performance demands as a commercial gate.
If you're a builder or fit-out contractor working on a commercial project that involves large sliding panels, it's worth talking to us before you source hardware. We often have what's needed in stock, and we can advise on the right spec for the load and the cycle frequency.
Retail display and creative applications
The BAYA carpet rack is our favourite example, but it's not the only one. Sliding display panels, feature walls on concealed tracks, sliding artwork in galleries, moveable room dividers in function centres — the hardware is the same; the context is just more interesting.
If you've got an idea for a sliding application and you're not sure whether the hardware exists to make it work, the answer is probably yes. Come talk to us.
